What to Back Up Before Removing Software

Protect projects, databases, profiles, presets, licenses, and local application data.

The word leftover describes location and timing, not safety. A file or registry value that remains after uninstall may be harmless, shared, or contain user data. Evidence and a recovery path should come before deletion.

What should be preserved

Before removing an application, determine whether it stores projects, profiles, templates, game saves, browser data or license information. These are not always located inside the program installation folder.

Backup steps

  1. Export data through the application's own export feature if one is available.
  2. Copy the relevant documents and user-data folders to a separate drive or backup destination.
  3. Record the software version and license/recovery information securely.
  4. Test that at least one saved file can be opened from the backup.

A Windows restore point does not replace a separate backup of personal files. See restore points for configuration recovery.
